Nevada Section News

Nevada section logo goes here November 17, 2009 - Nevada Section News for October 2009 - Well Winter is upon us and all attention turns to mountain-top repeater and antenna preventative maintenance. The month of October was filled with preparation for H1N1 flu vaccination exercises. From what was heard, some of the waiting lines got pretty tense and tempers flared. Please be careful and as with any emergency operation do not become one of the victims. Nevada was celebrated around the Section in different ways. The Las Vegas Radio Amateur Club operated a special event station celebrating the holiday operating under the call sign N7V. It sounded like there were no shortage of stations to talk to. The Elko Amateur Radio Club participated in the Nevada Day Parade in Elko, driving down Idaho Street throwing candy to awaiting children. Maybe next year they will be handing out PL-259's!

73 for now.

Joe - N7JEH

ARES logo goes here November 14, 2009 - ARES SEC Monthly Report for October 2009 - Had a most enjoyable visit with Clark County ARES team at their October 24 meeting. Thank you all for your great hospitality as usual. Pete, W7TKO is off and running as our new EC for Humboldt County. I plan on trying to make it to the November 21 meeting, weather permitting of course. If not that weekend, then perhaps a swing through northern state over Skywarn Weekend, again weather permitting.

Several drills and exercises (SETs) were held around the state, which you will read about in the DEC reports. These included a very successful exercise with some stellar simplex action by the NE District guys, and the POD exercise in Washoe County. Nice job guys!!

Thursday night VOiP net is going well with good participation and a couple of new NCS ops to extend rotation. The NV Hospital Assn. tells us that equipment is arriving and once all of it is in, will be distributed around the state. We will advise when that takes place.

EMCOMMWEST 2010 online registration will be coming soon. Executive Director Dick Flanagan, K7VC will notify us when this happens. Lots of planning continues, and a new, larger venue will be the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno April 30-May 2, 2010.

Looking forward to holidays coming soon, and wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving! 73 Don Carlson, KQ6FM Nevada SEC.

SOUTHERN DISTRICT REPORT- Glenn Hale, KB7REO, DEC - Comments: Busy month ARES wise. Don Carlson, KQ6FM joined us for the quarterly ARES meeting. The main topic discussed pertained to the rules governing licensed amateur operators working for emergency response agencies. Efforts continued with working on the packet links with Reno. I met up with Don KQ6FM and Otto KV7J during my trip to Carson City this past month. I had the opportunity to visit Nevada DEM. I participated in the Clark County, McCarran Airport exercise in a supporting role as the net operator. Clark County Report by Bill W7HMV, EC: Vern Garman, K0EGA, AEC-Operations, attended 3 exercise planning meetings in October and was in the McCarran Airport EOC during their Triennial Full Scale Exercise. Bill Smith, W7HMV, Clark County EC, attended the pre-exercise briefing for the McCarran Triennial Full Scale Exercise and attended the exercise as an observer. There were 36 attendees at our quarterly ARES/RACES meeting, which lasted three hours. Don Carlson, KQ6FM, SEC, was our guest for this meeting.

Southern Nye Co. Report by Jerry KC6ILH, EC: Did our SET on the 17th with a call out to the EOC and table top training with message handling and logging. The rest of the month was slow and please correct my last month EC report for the total volunteer ours to read 145 not 370, Thank You. Everyone have a Happy Turkey Day.

NORTHWEST DISTRICT REPORT - Paul Beavers, NG1Q, DEC Comments: Pershing County EC, Ed Maynard, KE7QHM, continues recovering nicely from his multiple bypass heart surgery. Ed is back on the air with his big signal from Rye Patch, NV.

Comments from Churchill County EC, Paul Willcoxon, KE7CRZ: Meta Brewster-KE7TXJ has accepted the position of AEC Administration for ARES of Churchill County. John Bob Moore-AD7CP has accepted the position as AEC for NAS Fallon. I know that they will do a great job and thanks to both for stepping forward to ccept these important positions. Bob-AD7CP has linked to TELNET at his BBS station. This has effectively cut down on much of the daily traffic that our present packet system is handling and frees up the network for more important traffic. I have discussed with our Emergency Manager the possibility of having Churchill County furnish us with a DSL line at the EOC for the existing BBS computer. This, too, would allow us to forward much of the traffic over TELNET as well as allow an ARES e-mail address for the EOC. We currently are able to connect to a few Las Vegas packet stations with TELNET and the interest is building for packet in Clark County. We are currently conducting traffic handling training on our weekly nets and that training is going quite well. Our next scheduled meeting will be Saturday November 21st at 10 A.M. at the Round Table Pizza Restaurant in Fallon.

Comments from Humboldt County EC, Pete Johnsen, W7TKO: Ski, AF7NB passed EC reigns to Pete, W7TKO. N6COA, Josef Woytowicz is acting Net Manager for November. W7TKO, Pete met with the W7LKO group on October 24, working on details of locating a linked 2 Meter repeater in WMCA. WO7I, Tom has donated a commercial 2 meter antenna for use with the packet node donated by N7EV. AF7NB, Ski is working on updating the EPROM of the packet node with KV7S, Otto. W7TKO, Pete is in talks with KWNA station owner regarding housing of an IRLP node. Three Technician class operators upgraded their licenses to General Class.

Comments from Lyon County EC, Patty Polish, KE7JIV: LCARES had a busy month starting with an opportunity to assist the Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue with communications during a mutual aid search with Carson City and Douglas County in the area of Churchill Canyon, Eldorado Canyon, Illinois Canyon, Sullivan Canyon, and Sunrise Pass. The next morning we attended a training WEBINAR on "DEPICTION" software. The group found this very interesting and thought it might be a good tool to use. After the training class we put up two new antennas at the EOC in Yerington. I would like to thank Brian Freitag, KE7JIO, Al Penaluna, N7RAA, Dennis Maginot, KE7JIS, Tom Foss, K6ICE, and John Abrott, KD7NHC, for their great team work on this project. I personally learned more about my antenna tuner and we all learned how important it is to check all components before they are put 40 feet in the air. Brian Freitag made updates to the webpage - thanks Brian. And John Abrott worked at the Nevada Day Parade. Good job LCARES!

Comments from Washoe County EC, Bob Miller, WA6MTY: October ARES Training on October 3rd Dr. Randy Todd of WC District Health did a presentation on the up-coming POD (Point of Dispensing) exercise. ARES will train in the redundant handling of POD communications between each POD and the WCHD Operating Center. ARES will also provide internal communications within the POD's and shadow communications for the POD Incident management teams. October 17th the WC District Health/Rotary Club Seasonal Flu Shot conducted the event in the form of a POD exercise. ARES teams provided backup communications during this emergency training event. Thanks to the following team members who participated; Steve K7SJW, Dee KA7LOZ, Arlan KA7ZAU, Ray KB7GNA, Ed KB7ZBN, Andy KD7ZEV, Dan KE7HLR, Jib KE7TOS, Dave KF7BNO, Don KQ6FM, Richard N7TGB, Paul NG1Q, Nick W7NIK, Leif W7RNV, Bob WA6MTY, Joe WA6RKN October 21st I attended the planning meeting for the mass fatality exercise Deadly Hazard that will take place on November 17th at the old Incline Elementary School at Incline, NV. ARES volunteers will be needed and are encouraged to participate.

Comments from Douglas County EC, Sheila Clement, KA7AJQ: DCART members logged 171.5 hours to our nets, training meeting, ICS on line courses, packet radio, web site/list maintenance, ham station technical operations and the Nevada Day Parade. John Abrott, KD7NHC, organized area hams (including some DCART members) for support communications for the Nevada Day Parade on October 31, 2009, in Carson City. We held a tabletop exercise at our monthly meeting and talked through an earthquake scenario. All of our training serves as experience for our DCART Nevada operations and also for communications support for Alpine County (California) events and emergencies.

NORTHEAST DISTRICT REPORT Greg Barker, K7CWL - DEC Comments: Northeast District ARES completed a SET Exercise Oct 17, primarily in Elko with participation from Battle Mountain as well. This was a simulated Earthquake in the Northeastern US which took out the Power Grid leaving all of Northeastern Nevada without power, including all Cell Towers and served agency mountain top communications. Northeast District ARES was asked to provide tactical communications between mupliple strategic locations in the area to help facilitate emergency response. A call was put out on the Elko Amateur Radio Club's linked repeater system (battery back up for ~2-3 days) for assistance and for any availabe stations to report to a staging area at the hospital for deployment. Within 10 minutes, 16 stations replied. 8 stations were able to make it to the staging area under 12 minutes from the initial call. Each station was given a location assignment with specific instructions. Each proceeded to their prescribed location and cheked back in. This took no more than 15 minutes. All stations then checked back onto the linked repeater system. Instructions were then given to QSY to 146.55 Simplex and check back into Net control. One station was deployed to Lamoille Summit to give relay capability back to net control from several stations in Spring Creek area over the hill. All stations were heard by net control full quieting with the exception of 1, but relay offered the link. Thanks to Richard Jellico, our only Lander County active ham and ARES member for making the drive to the top of Mt. Lewis. We demonstrated the ability to communicate from Battle Mountain to Elko from Lewis to Lamoille Summit. All but 1 station in Elko was able to copy the Battle Mountain station Simplex. All in all, a very successful exercise and a lot of fun to boot. I was very pleased to be able to report to the Elko County LEPC group that we have the abiltiy in a short amount of time to establish in a timely manner tactical communications links between locations key to the Elko County Emergeny Plan if execution were needed. Thanks to all who participated: WA7BWF, W6RSJ, KE7HTY, N7JEH, AD7OO, KD7ATL, KF7EPU, W7GK, KF7DLW, KB7SJZ, K7PRT, NB9E, N7EV, N7XHB, and NQ7P Northeast Dist DEC, & Elko County EC, K7CWL is looking forward to meeting with Humboldt County EC, Pete, W7TKO to present to the Lander County LEPC in November to introduce that group to amateur radio and northern Nevada ARES emergency comms capabilities.

Reno QRP Club logo goes here October 16, 2009 - Reno QRP News - CONGRATULATIONS to Dave Miles who is a newly licensed Ham, KF7EGU. Dave was a great asset in our Field Day operations last June. He intends to upgrade very soon.

LUNCH: will be this coming Monday, October 19, 11:30am at La Fuente Restaurant, 790 Baring Bl in Sparks. All Hams are welcome. Show n Tell is encouraged.

NEW BEGALI BUG - "Intrepid" - a review from Ron, G3XOV
Well my Begali Intrepid bug has arrived direct from Italy, very well packed and obviously shipped with care by DPD Couriers. The first thing that struck me on unpacking the key was the weight (around 6lbs) and solid construction. It's beautifully finished and comes with a booklet describing the adjustment process. The base is cast iron and finished in a dark grey while the upper parts are gold plated with the levers in silver. This key, once on the desk,is certainly not going to move about. I've tried to move it with a very heavy keying fist and it won't budge! There are 8 points of adjustment and magnets are used for dot spacing and damping. The key can be set for a very light action and with its solid feel,it tends to give me an overall "in control" feeling.Once on the desk and hooked up to the radio,I was surprised at the complete silence of the pendulum, the only sound is the making of the dash contacts with a light "click". There are two speed weights and they can be set from around 16/17wpm up to 40wpm.A nice 20wpm can be achieved with one weight at either end of the pendulum. All adjustments are made with fine threaded and spring loaded screws (no lock nuts). I've found the key very comfortable to use and the weight and solid construction all adds to the overall enjoyment. I'ts definately a winner for me. At the price of 455euros, this translated to £420 (that's well over $700 - w) and,for many of us is a considered purchase (I sold 2 bugs to part finance it). The key is No.16 so they're not selling in vast quantities but I'm happy I got mine.

(tnx to Steve, NU7T for this)

SIERA logo goes here October 16, 2009 - SIERA club meeting for October - Glenn Thomas WB6W shared information on SDR (Software Defined Radios) at our meeting. Glenn has both the Flex 1000, and 3000 radios and demonstrated the Flex3000 radio. This is a state of the art radio, and has many features. The current issue of QST has an excellent write-up about the Flex radios. All enjoyed the chance to see how this new technology performs.

Discussion of the club's nominations committe was also part of the meeting. Members who are interested in being a club officer for 2010 should contact club President John Abrott KD7NHC for details. Members who are not interested in being a club officer for 2010 should contact club President John Abrott KD7NHC to volunteer to serve on the nominations committee.

The SIERA General meetings are the third Thursday of most months. The meeting are at 7:00 PM at the Methodist church on Centerville LN, Gardnerville.

Nevada section logo goes here October 14, 2009 - Nevada Section News for September 2009 - Simulated Emergency Tests are scheduled throughout the Section in October. Repeater work on the mountain tops is winding down ahead of snowfalls. Don, KQ6FM the Section Emergency Coordinator will be traveling to Clark County for the quarterly ARES/RACES meeting. Planning for the EMCOMMWEST 2010 ARRL Specialty Convention is continuing. We are currently looking for speakers. Information can be found at www.emcommwest.org. We have seen some fall and yes, winter weather hit in parts of the Section. Get your antennas ready for winter before it is too late. HF propagation has been on the upswing. Look on the upper bands, you may be very surprised!

73 for now.

Joe - N7JEH

ARES logo goes here October 12, 2009 - ARES SEC Monthly Report for September 2009 - It has been a very light summer, but September shows much more activity with regard to ARES related events and activities. Much of this is due to the fact that it has been a very light fire season. As fall is now here, we are gearing up for our SET s in October as we speak. Since most areas have some very extensive and worthy drills and exercises coming up, we will be doing District SET exercises this year. NW District has POD s scheduled for October 10 and 17 and there are a couple of major things in Southern District as well so rather than duplicate efforts, we will rely on those to serve as SET this year. I will be traveling to Las Vegas for the Clark County ARES meeting on October 24 and look forward to seeing Glenn, Kent, Billy and the crew soon. With winter just around the corner, now is the time to make sure that we are winter ready with go-kits realigned, batteries charged in case of power outages, and vehicles winterized. Also any repeater work on mountain tops needs to be completed so that our infrastructure is firmly in place. Finally, by the time you read this, (and as you ll read in the NW District Report), Ski, AF7NB will have stepped down as Humbolt County EC. During the 2 years he has held this position, has founded a team that is on the move, and started some incredible things. So on behalf of the entire NV section, I d like to personally thank you Ski, for an awesome job. Your hard work and dedication will see that we are secure for many years to come. That's all folks!

73 Don Carlson, KQ6FM Nevada SEC

SOUTHERN DISTRICT REPORT - This past month I was busy getting my shack back together. The new installation has improved my ability to reach certain repeaters, in particular the Glendale, NV repeater. Don NF7R and Roy K7YWF in Logandale NV spoke with me on the repeater and said I was full quieting. I've also been working on my packet station to get Winlink access. During the set up, I keyboard QSO'd with Otto KV7J in Carson City via Richards KE7XO's BPQ packet node. The node provides a way to reach stations in Henderson, Telnet linking to Reno and a BBS bulletin board site. Efforts are underway to link Las Vegas with Carson City and NV DEM. We'll soon have another digipeater at the PBS building to improve packet coverage in the southern part of the valley. Ron WB5KLJ is also working at installing a packet node in Goldfield. The effort may someday provide RF packet links to outlying areas.

Clark County Report by Bill W7HMV, EC Vern Garman, K0EGA, attended several planning sessions for the November N.Las Vegas full-scale exercise and for the May 2010 National Level Exercise. I attended a regular meeting of the Nevada Communications Steering Committee and assisted Dan Star, AA7I, with the installation of a new cable modem in the Clark County Emergency Communications Center.

Southern Nye Co. Report by Jerry KC6ILH, EC The last two-week ends kept us busy. Starting off with the Pony Express Re-ride safety and water support. Followed by the Fall Festival parade communications support. Long days on both, however very productive for training and that's what these things are all about, beside the support for the community. Fall has fallen around hear with cold weather. Time to check out your batteries for that sort of weather with a good cleaning and a charge.

Northern Nye Co. Report by Randy, KB7TRI, EC KB7TRI met with new air ambulance service and created newspaper article promoting air ambulance now based in Tonopah

NORTHWEST DISTRICT REPORT - Paul Beavers, NG1Q, DEC First we want to wish Ski, AF7NB, all the best as he steps down from a job well done as Humboldt County EC. Read more from Ski in the attached comments. And we welcome Pete, W7TKO, as the incoming Humboldt County EC. Ski and Pete have worked together with many others to build a great AREAS team in Humboldt County. We look foward to working with both in the days ahead. With a combination of an emergency search and rescue, earthquake excercise, many ARES training programs and charity events, September was a very busy month in the Northwest Nevada District. Looking ahead, the October calendar is loaded with more training and SET's. Cheers and 73 to all, Paul NG1Q Northwest DEC.

Churchill County EC Paul Willcoxon, KE7CRZ, comments: Our next meeting will be at 10 A.M. October 17, 2009 at Round Table Pizza Restaurant in Fallon.

Douglas, Carson City, Alpine Counties EC, Sheila Clement, KA7AJQ, comments: DCART members logged 132 hours in September to our meeting, weekly net, packet training, our 911 Dispatch ham station upgrade, and ham radio emergency communications support for the Tour de Tahoe bike ride. We welcome 5 new members for September. Don McRoberts, W3DRM, a DCART member, and on behalf of the Tahoe Amateur Radio Association, organized Amateur Radio support for the Tour de Tahoe Bike Ride that took place on September 13.. Hams staffed the planned sites around Lake Tahoe and also the SAGs (support vehicles) for the event. Several DCART and TARA members supported this fine event. Don, W3DRM, also maintains our DCART website. http://dcart.carsonvalleyweather.com/ Dale Anderson, KV7S, installed our new dual band (VHF/UHF) radio at our 911 Dispatch Center ham station and began installation of the second set of earphones for each radio. The other new dual band will go into the 911 Dispatch mobile unit, known as Unit 900. The older VHF radio from Dispatch will go into Unit 900 for packet operations.

Humboldt County EC Ski Woytowicz, AF7NB, comments: This is a combined report for August and September. We had strong turnout for our weekly VHF/UHF nets as well as Humboldt stations checking into the state ARES net on Saturdays. The Tri-County Fair effort was a success. Many thanks go to Kim Petersen (KF7EAF), Dave Roden (KF7CGO), Dick Weisgerber (KD7MIO), Don Hogg (KF7VNW), Pat Henigin (N6ZEM), and especially to Pete Johnsen (W7TKO) for his superb organizational skills and determined effort. We fielded HF, VHF/UHF, and packet stations. AF7NB sent message traffic to KD7MIO via packet at the fair. W7TKO (Pete), AF7NB (Ski), and KD7MIO (Dick) are also fully functional mobile packet stations as well. We are welcoming Richard Nendick (W7QWD) and Barry Hayes (KE6DBN) as new members of Humboldt County ARES. A huge thanks goes to Mike Giles (N7EV) from the Elko group for donating a fully operational packet node to Humboldt ARES. We are currently in the process of negotiating with AT&T for a space in their mobile radio site on Winnemucca Mountain for the Humboldt packet node and a voice repeater from W7LKO to finally link the I-80 corridor back to Elko. Many tests were run by Ski AF7NB, Ed KE7QHM, Joe N6COA, and Pete W7TKO to determine what areas will work in our fledgling packet network. Many thanks for all the long hours and days invested in this effort. Ski AF7NB and Don KE7VNW, with ARES members in the telephone trade, have built a subset unit within Humboldt ARES. It is the Telephone Pioneer Radio Club of Humboldt County. Application has been made to the FCC via the ARRL to secure the callsign K6ECC (Emergency Control Center) to be used at the new Humboldt ARES node and repeater sites. Our newer members Jim KF7EBI, Steve KF7EAE, Kim KF7EAF, and Lane KF7EAG have all managed to put together more than basic VHF/UHF stations. Way to go fellows! They are more than ready to communicate whether on the regular nets or cross-banding to assist others. Humboldt ARES ardent supporter and repeater owner Tom Bunch WO7I located the fault in the 442.825 machine as a defective PL decoder, replaced it, and we are once again enjoying the benefits of Tom's machine in our group. We also wish to thank K7UI for the use of his machine (443.700) while Tom was repairing the 442.825 repeater. The Winnemucca VE team component of Humboldt ARES will be conducting a HAM KRAM and exam at the Winnemucca Ambulance barn at 1000 Mizpah St (next to Humboldt General Hospital) on 24 October 2009 starting at 0800 hours. If you need an exam and are passing through, please stop, say hello, and take your exam with our team. We are glad to have you stop by. It is with some sadness that this will be my last report as Emergency Coordinator for Humboldt County. At our next meeting (17 October 2009 1300 hours Las Margaritas Restaurant Winnemucca NV), I will be passing command over to Pete Johnsen W7TKO to assume the leadership. My employer has a significant amount of work for me that in good conscience will demand most of my time and effort. Pete is an awesome replacement and he will be able to carry Humboldt ARES/RACES to even greater accomplishments during his tenure. Building this organization from the ground up with a team of outstanding hams and non-hams has thrilled me to no end. It is teamwork and a sincere desire to serve others that produced the recipe for our progress and success. I will still maintain my ARES membership and look forward to working closely with the team as I have spare moments from my employment. Thank you all for making Humboldt ARES a smashing success and making me so very proud of you all. Sincerely S.M. SKI Woytowicz (AF7NB) Lyon County EC

Patty Polish, KE7JIV, comments: LCARES had the opportunity to assist the Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue with communications during a recent search for two men whose vehicle had slid down the side of a hill. Communications in the search area are known to be bad with regards to simplex and in some cases access to the Sheriff's Office repeaters, so LCARES was requested to ensure adequate communications could be made at all times. Bob Freeman, KE7ATZ, and Kim Freeman, KE7DOR, responded to staging and were used as primary communications. John Abrott, KD7NHC, was placed on standby in Yerington and Tom Foss, K6ICE, checked in from Mason Valley should we need additional assistance. Two prospective members, Mike Detullio, KE7GFS, and David Cleland, KE7WPD, were with the search teams. Patty Polish, KE7JIV, operated the net. I want to thank all of those who participated. The communication efforts ensured that the Command Post and responders knew what was happening. Great Job LCARES!!

Pershing County EC, Ed Maynard, KE7QHM, comments: I met with Washoe CO. ARES and SNARS in Reno. Got some message handling training and some info on ARRL policy. Also went to Wnnnemucca for Humbolt CO. ARES. I met Matt Rees the Administrator for Pershing CO. hospital and, at his request, sent him a memo with suggestions and information on how to set up and train his staff for their amateur radio station that may soon be delivered.

Washoe County EC, Bob Miller, WA6MTY, comments: On September 3rd, Don KQ6FM and I put on a One Day Ham Cram for eight St. Mary s Hospital employees. All eight earned their Technician license. Thanks to Bruce N7ZA and the ARRL VE team for proctoring the exams. Frank KE7AJO and I put on a three hour basic training for the St. Mary s ARES team. Because Saturday September 5th was Labor Day Weekend, the ARES training was moved to September 12th at the Regional Emergency Operations Center. Our guest speaker was John Flamm E &r; I OFFICER and Systems Administrator Dept Health and Human Services and his presentation was the Have-Bed system that Nevada Hospitals use to provide status of empty beds, specialists and equipment available that may be required by an evacuating hospital. On Sept 17th I attended the first Regional Training and Exercise Planning Workshop at the REOC. Representatives from several of our served agencies listed their planned training requirements for the government fiscal year October 2009 to September 2010. The plan is to show the planned training allowing coordinationand possibly consolidation of training for this time period. On September 19th, the Sparks LDS church Stake held an Emergency Preparedness Conference. There was an ARES demonstration at the event. September 26th was the Tahoe Century Ride, with communications coordination headed by Doug KA7FOO. The event is a fun ride fundraiser for the Tahoe City High School Music Department. The following ARES members that I know of participated in the exercise: Arlan KA7ZAU, Dan N2RDO, Dan KE7HLR, Ed KB7ZBN, Frank KE7ZJO, Fred WA6GOG, Harold WA1RAT, Leif W7RNV, Leif KF7AMY, Richard N7TGB, Rob KI6TRK, Steve KE7HLS, and Tim KY7Y Also on September 26th there was a CERT earthquake training where CERT teams collected damage assessment and ARES sent the data to the REOC. The following ARES members participated in the exercise: KE7BQX Kevin, WA6MTY Bob, KA7LOZ Dee, KC7WXD Jacob, NG1Q Paul, N7ZA Bruce, KD7ZEV Andy, AE7Z Lon, KF7EGR Katie, KA7ZAU Arlan, KE7TOS Jib.

NORTHEAST DISTRICT REPORT Greg Barker, K7CWL, DEC - The Northeast District ARES welcome three new ARES members. Alan Hedges, KK7NF from Ely becomes our first member for White Pine County. Dale W. Scott "Scotty", KF7MT and Brynda Frazier, KF7AXY of Spring Creek and Elko respectevly also join ARES and also represent Sierra Electronics here in Elko on the Elko County LEPC. A warm welcome to each of them and a big thanks for their willingness to participate. Greg Barker, K7CWL, NE Dist DEC met with Elko County LEPC and presented information about the NE Dist SET Exercise. The LEPC has requested a report of our exercise. Preparations in September were made for the Oct 17th SET exercise to test simplex capabilities in the Elko & Spring Creek area in the event of complete loss of power and mountain top reapeater systems. Participating members will be dispached to several strategically important locations in the area as it relates to the Elko County Emerg. Plan, and that would be helpful in assisting local served agencies in the event of an emergeny. Road trip is in the works to meet with amateurs in Ely and Wendover to estabilish ARES interest and participation.
